Our Philosophy

PACT's motto is CHANGE STARTS WITH YOUR UNDERWEAR. The purchase of PACT underwear is participation in a social movement: when you buy PACT underwear, you are supporting and encouraging organic cotton farmers, responsible labor practices, and businesses that form partnerships with nonprofit organizations dedicated to positive change in our world. >>

PACT is your everyday underwear. It's made with the highest quality soft, organic Turkish cotton, with 5% elastane for a perfect stretch. PACT may be stylish and sexy, but it's designed to be comfortable for everyday living and is the best choice for the sustainably-minded consumer.

According to Yvon Chouinard, "There's no such thing as sustainability. It's just kind of a path you get on and try - each day try to make it better." At PACT, we're committed to operating in as sustainable a manner as possible while still running a viable business. On our journey putting this company together, we've made numerous, carefully considered decisions about how we can best accomplish this goal. Each of these decisions was made for a reason, and with that in mind, we'd like to share with you exactly what ingredients go into making your PACT underwear. We know we aren't perfect, but sustainability is a journey, not a destination. We're in this for the long haul, and we know we are going to continuously adapt to reduce the impact of the underwear we sell and be a vehicle for social and environmental change. <<

The Supply Chain

Beginning with the farmers and ending with the final package arriving at your door, PACT strives to be as environmentally and socially responsible as possible. The farmers and cotton pickers involved in the growing and harvesting of the organic cotton were paid a fair price for their product. All fabric is dyed and printed using dyes and inks that are low-impact and free of heavy metals. Before it is shipped to PACT's fulfillment center in Illinois, every element that goes into making your PACT underwear - growing the cotton, processing and spinning it, knitting or weaving, dyeing and printing, and cutting and sewing the final garment - occurs within a 100-mile radius in Turkey. >>

This is truly a regional manufacturing model that vastly reduces the carbon footprint of our supply chain. In fact, by manufacturing with a regional supply chain in Turkey and shipping the product in bulk to the US, our overall environmental impact is smaller than if we tried to manufacture the same product with a geographically fractured supply chain in the US. <<

The Raw Materials

PACT underwear is made of 95% organic cotton and 5% elastane to give it the perfect amount of stretch. While some underwear is 100% organic cotton, these garments tend to lose their shape quickly and have shorter lifespans - meaning more of them end up in landfills. A garment containing 5% elastane is still considered organic. >>

The cotton that eventually turns into PACT underwear is grown at Egedeniz's own organic cotton project, the Kadioglu Organic Cotton Project, located in the Izmir region of Turkey. You can rest assured that the cotton is certified organic and non-GMO: all processes from the fields through ginning, spinning, knitting or weaving, washing, dyeing and manufacturing are certified by the Dutch controlling and certifying organization Skal, a part of the Control Union World Group. Furthermore, Egedeniz is the first factory in Turkey to receive GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification and, unlike many factories around the world, every one of Egedeniz's processes are GOTS certified. Additionally, all of Egedeniz's processes are certified by the National Organic Program (NOP) of the USDA.

What about Fair Trade? Turkey is not considered a "developing" country by the Fairtrade Labeling Organization FLO-CERT, so goods from Turkey cannot be labeled as "fairtrade". However, this does not mean that farmers in Turkey are free from exploitation. In order to ensure the best quality cotton from farmers that are paid fairly, Egedeniz has partnered with its own cotton project.

Some people have already asked why PACT doesn't make underwear out of bamboo or soy. Don't we know that cotton, even organic cotton, uses a lot of water? One of the most important things that Jeff and Jason have learned in developing the PACT brand is that everything has a trade-off. If you want to change the products people buy, they still have to want to buy them. We know that organic cotton is not 100% environmentally friendly, but it is much better than conventional cotton grown with pesticides - and that is the cotton we want to replace. The overwhelming majority of underwear sold around the world is made with conventional cotton. We want our customers to stop buying conventionally grown cotton underwear and replace them with a beautiful pair of organic stretch cotton underwear from PACT. Our customers can take an easy step toward a more sustainable lifestyle without giving up what they feel comfortable wearing.

And this is one reason that change starts with your underwear.

Furthermore, while growing bamboo is generally quite environmentally friendly, the downside is that the fibers are quite tough. As a result, strong chemical solvents are required to process the material into soft fabric, raising both health and environmental concerns. And, while soy is a naturally soft material, the fabric is less durable, so your underwear would deteriorate more quickly and have to be replaced more often, which has its own negative environmental impact.

Materials are just one of the areas where we are constantly working to reduce our environmental footprint. Stay tuned. <<

Inks and Dyes

PACT works with artists and designers to create some beautiful and innovative textile prints. We believe that organic clothing doesn't have to be that drab oatmeal color. We love color! But, certain inks and dyes can be environmentally damaging. PACT does not use inks or dyes that contain heavy metals and purposefully does not make any garments in optic white because of the harsh bleaches required to achieve a bright white. All inks and dyes meet or exceed GOTS and EKO standards. >>

There is no PVC or other harsh polymer used in any of our garments. The care and contents label on the inside of the garment and the PACT logo on the outside are printed with a water-based ink and a heat transfer process.

Inks and dyes are one area of environmental sustainability that PACT will be innovating as we move forward as a company. We are following this industry closely and are always keen to hear about innovations so please feel free to get in touch with us at change@wearPACT.com <<

The Manufacturing

Egedeniz Tekstil is an exemplary garment factory with regard to both environmental and social standards. It was the very first certified organic factory in Turkey and continues to be on the leading edge of supporting the organic cotton movement. Factory owner Aydin Unsal is a board member of the Organic Exchange and is constantly looking for new ways to support the organic cotton movement around the world. Egedeniz is certified under the GOTS, NOP USDA, and Fair Labor Association (FLA) standards.

The Underwear Bags

Each pair of underwear is packed in its own reusable fabric bag. Typically, each pair of underwear would be shipped from the factory in its own individual plastic bag. Some of our fabric bags, however, are produced from off-cuts (excess fabric), so PACT eliminates tens of thousands of plastic bags. And you get to keep and reuse the fabric bag for whatever you want! Use them for your glasses, jewelry, iPod, computer cords and chargers, or whatever. Let us know how you use your fabric bag by sending an email to us at change@wearPACT.com

The Shipping Bags

PACT's unique bright green shipping package is made from a special material that is 100% compostable. It can go straight into your green bin for commercial composting. Even the shipping label and the adhesive used to affix the label are compostable. The material is certified compostable under ASTM-6400 (American Society for Testing Material) which sets the standard for compostability in California. For more information, see http://astm.org/Standard/index.shtml

Transportation

PACT has three different phases of transportation to consider. First, there is transportation within the supply chain, including moving the raw cotton to be processed and spun, knit or woven, dyed and screen printed, and, finally, cut and sewn into a final product. We work with Egedeniz Textile Company, who contracts with local farmers and third-party processors, to ensure all elements of production are as close together as possible to minimize this phase of transportation. This entire supply chain takes place within a 100-mile radius. >>

After Egedeniz manufactures the finished underwear, they are shipped to PACT's fulfillment center in Illinois. While some shipments need to be shipped via air in order to make tight deadlines, the majority of PACT's shipments are sent by sea - the least carbon intensive form of shipping. We are always looking for innovative ways to reduce the environmental cost of shipping our goods.

Finally, after arriving at the fulfillment center in the US, PACT underwear are shipped around the country to our loyal customers. We designed the packaging bag for use in the United States Postal Service - not FedEx, UPS, or DHL, whose carbon footprints are much larger than USPS. The USPS represents the shipping network with the lowest carbon footprint, so we encourage our customers to use USPS shipping when ordering PACT. <<

The Employees and our Berkeley Office

PACT's administrative headquarters are located in Berkeley, California. All of our employees live within a few miles of the office and walk, bike, or use public transportation to get here. When we have meetings in the big city, we use the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system to get there. There are no company vehicles or fancy parking spots.

Most of the furniture in the office was recycled from friends and family - it is not pretty.

Exactly what you get in your PACT package

Nothing that is shipped to you - the underwear, fabric bags, or compostable shipping bag and labels - should end up in a landfill. We're hoping that by the time your PACT underwear is well-worn and you're ready to get rid of it, we'll have figured out a way to recycle it. We are constantly searching for innovative ideas about how to best accomplish the cradle-to-cradle goal and move away from the idea of consuming and then discarding.

Have an idea? Tell us about it at change@wearPACT.com

Sustainability is a dynamic process and we are trying our best to consider every impact our underwear has on the planet and its inhabitants.
